Emergency Backstop Mechanism

From 1 October 2024 there will be a new requirement for all solar and/or battery inverters connected to the grid on the Powercor distribution network (covering most of central Victoria). This mechanism is called the emergency backstop requirement and has been mandated by the AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator).

These requirements give the AEMO and your network operator the ability to restrict solar pv exports during grid stability events.

An additional requirement is that solar inverters must be connected to the internet to enable your electricity distributor to safely manage your system and to keep exporting excess solar to the grid.

Note that these requirements do not apply to solar systems installed prior to 1 October 2024.

The full details of this requirement are explained in this document.
